Committee and Work Group Information

The strength of the Iowa Association of REALTORS® comes from its many members offering their time, perspective, and ideas on the challenges and opportunities facing the real estate industry. Whether your interest is in legislative issues, marketing, technology, public policy, professional development or one of many other areas, the Iowa Association of REALTORS® encourages you to get involved and help to serve our membership and work to protect private property rights in Iowa.

It’s easy to get involved! Take a look at some of the groups that will be meeting during the 2009 Convention, September 21-24 in West Des Moines (below). Since most meetings are open to members (except where noted), you can stop by and participate.

Young REALTORS® Group
This group provides a great way for young REALTORS® (generally those under 40) to get connected with the Association, develop programs that benefit new or young agents, and potentially transition into other leadership areas within the Association. A group that equally divides its time between social events and business, this group has recently helped to provide guidance for new post license education requirements, and held fun events like a scavenger hunt in the Des Moines metro area.

Public Relations/Marketing Committee
This group works to promote association events, issues, and meetings, plus develops and coordinates the annual state-wide REALTOR® awareness campaign. Additional projects include special events like the Iowa State Fair booth, creation of billboard and radio advertisements, and promotion of REALTORS® and REALTOR® properties for sale via Association websites and traditional media.

Education Workgroup
This group focuses on issues related to professional development for members of the Association. This group has been busy recently developing suggestions for new license law requirements and post-license education requirements. As a result of this group’s suggestions, Association legislative staff has successfully advocated changes in the Iowa Code and Administrative rules relating to real estate professional development.

Legal Action Workgroup
This group reviews the status of the Legal Reference Program offered by the Association, helps develop programs focusing on risk management, and determines the level of financial assistance that should be provided to members or boards involved in litigation. This group is very involved in current legal issues and was recently instrumental in the Association’s successful litigation against several online establishments practicing real estate in Iowa without a license.

Legislative Committee
The legislative committee works directly with Association lobbying staff to help promote Association legislative goals as set forth in the Association Statement of Policy. This group is very active each spring and meets weekly via web conference to discuss the latest legislation being introduced by the Iowa Legislature and to determine if the legislation is in the best interest of the Association and its members. Iowa REALTORS® can thank this group for recent legislative victories protecting private property rights and the place of the REALTOR® in a real estate transaction.

RPAC/RPEC Committees
These committees help to provide the legislative resources necessary to maintain a successful legislative agenda, including grassroots and local political action, political education, and financial fundraising and disbursement to candidates and political organizations. These groups are active with an annual legislative “hill visit” day in February, informative programs throughout the year, and an annual fundraising goal of at least $150,000.
